According to Microsoft, about

80
of jobs are in frontline positions.

It means that in 80% of cases, your main target audience is frontline workers. However, frontline workers are still the hardest to stay in touch with.

One of the most important aspects of successful internal communications is the proper motivation. We know that the best people to motivate properly employees are managers. And the best people to tell managers how to communicate and motivate properly are internal comms.

So here are some ideas on how you can help motivate frontline workers:

Learn more about your colleagues' cultural background, but not in a creepy way 😉

This is especially handy for multinational companies. You can’t win every factory with one strategy. Learning more about holidays and other special days of your frontline workers may help you speak with them the same language and on the right days.

Having this knowledge you may want to prepare personalized recognition campaigns for employees. Remember the holidays you now know of? Great! Let’s celebrate them on the company’s portal. Let people talk about their traditions and congratulate each other on the holidays.

Let your people discuss any topic they want

It is crucial to make your intranet/mobile app a comfortable place where any person can find something for them. People like social media because it has something for everyone.

Tip: Don’t limit the portal to only be for corporate news. Throw some hobbies communities, flea market groups, and ‘give your colleague a lift’ pages in it. The more everyday topics will appear on your platform, the higher user adoption will be.

Adopt the idea of having employee evaluation and recognition as a fun challenge to celebrate progress

How about letting managers reward frontline workers on the intranet with special badges of honor? With this approach, your employees will be more eager to log in to the intranet and check out news and leaderboards.

Tip: Having executive badges may help boost the activity and highlight the most active workers.

Staying in touch is key so you can survey what types and channels of information work best for frontline workers

To motivate them, you can launch a simple gamification campaign with points for completing the survey and prizes to redeem.

Tip: A marketplace with different types of prizes will help to ensure that every employee finds a prize they like.

Also, it is always a good idea to meet people personally and spend some extra time with them. Maybe, celebrate some of the local holidays and see how they like to communicate.

So, what are your ways to motivate frontline workers?
